MILAN GRYGAR. Drawings and Sound 29.06-20.08.2010

Curator: Martin Dostal
Foksal Gallery, Warsaw
The exhibition in Foksal Gallery in Warsaw is the first for many years so large exhibition of the outstanding representative of Czech avant-garde Milan Grygara
in Poland, which is curated by Martin Dostal.
As the curator emphasises, an important role in Milan Grygar’s artistic work is played by drawing. Great breakthrough conducted by Milan Grygara’s artistic experiments was the discovery from the mid-60s: „the line as a direction and energy acquires additional spatial potential as sound, when discovered that pencil on paper produces sound. Around 1965 he stopped his abstract painting and began acoustic drawings and drawing events, where recorded sounds were equally important to the visual elements.” He named these works „score”, and what is interesting, many of them
were handed to be performed by professional musicians. And what Martin Dostal emphasises is that ”Many of these works have been carried out at concerts
in the Czech Republic, Europe and in the USA. At that time Milan Grygar stood
alongside John Cage as a pioneer in the use of sound in the fine art.”
